Because they are porous, soft woods like pine, maple, alder, fir and birch often look blotchy when stained. Use Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner prior to staining for even color and greater stain control.

To determine if the wood you're using requires a conditioner, press your fingernail into an inconspicuous area of the wood. If you leave a dent, the wood is soft.

STEP 1: Stir the contents of the wood conditioner thoroughly before use. Apply Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner with a brush or clean, lint-free cloth. For best results, apply the conditioner across the grain until the wood is saturated on top. Wipe the excess wood conditioner off in the direction of the wood grain.
Don't let the conditioner dry before wiping off the excess.
STEP 2: Allow the conditioner to penetrate for 30 minutes before staining.
Note: Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner is not recommended for use with water-based stains.
