Chemical strippingBack to Removing old finishes
When shopping for strippers, take note of your working conditions. Many strippers are made of strong chemicals that can be dangerous if they contact your skin or if you don't have proper ventilation in your working environment. There are several strippers on the market that are much safer to work with including one developed by 3M called "Safest Stripper." Take note of your workspace to determine which chemical stripper is best for you.

STEP 1: Start by properly preparing your area. Because chemical strippers vary, be sure to read the directions carefully before beginning. Lay down newspapers and make sure you are away from any open flames -- including your furnace if you're working in the basement.
STEP 2: We recommend sealing smaller pieces in a plastic bag. Before you get started, it's best to cover the piece with the bag and then remove the bag, leaving it at the base. If you're using plastic sheeting for larger pieces, set it up so that you don't have to handle the furniture after the stripper is applied.
STEP 3: Put on your gloves and respirator to protect yourself from strong chemicals. Some strippers don't require taking this measure, but be sure to check the directions before you make any assumptions.
STEP 4: Transfer some of the stripper to a smaller container. Make sure that it's not something that the stripper will eat through. (That could be a real mess.)
STEP 5: Apply a thick coat of stripper beginning with any large, flat surfaces at the top and working your way down. Try not to overbrush the stripper.
Tip: You may want to sprinkle sawdust on the freshly applied stripper to make removal easier.
