Painting Over Danish Oil on Poplar Bookshelves
Q: I want to paint over some poplar bookshelves that have been treated recently with Watco Danish oil. Can I paint it now, and if so do I need an oil based paint in order to have it work well over the Watco?

A: Yes, you can paint as soon as the Watco is dry. You must use a finish that will adhere to the oil, but you’d be surprised at the range of options. In addition to oil based paint you can prime it with a variety of primers, such as Zinsser BIN, that will bond and allow you to use any paint over it. Probably the easiest choice is Rust-Oleum Universal, an aerosol paint that does not require primer and will bond to just about anything.
