| Q: My husband painted my grandmother's table with dark brown interior satin enamel using a brush, then used his auto body paint sprayer to spray three coats of oil based Varathane on top. He ended up with some dust specs in the final coat. He says he can use the same rubbing compound that he's used on his car body to rub out these little dust specs.
A: He’s absolutely right, but it will go faster if he levels the nibs first with very fine 800 grit or higher self lubricating sandpaper before moving on to the rubbing and polishing compounds. He’ll find such papers at the auto paint store. Remind him, gently, of course, that the finish must be fully cured before rubbing, and for gloss rubbing compounds, that means at least four to six weeks after the last coat.
