| Q: I have fallen in love with a table which is advertised as available in white, but is actually only available in black. I am to the point where I would order the black one but still want it to be an off-white. Can you give me the best and worst possible scenarios?
A: Painting a new black table white is a lot easier than you seem to think. Even though it is new, clean off any handling and shipping oils by scrubbing the piece with mineral spirits or TSP on nylon abrasive pads. Sand lightly to de-gloss the surface using 320 or 400 grit paper. Apply a coat of Zinsser BIN, a white primer, then apply white paint atop that. Given the options, I would use Rust-Oleum’s new Universal paint. It’s in a very comfortable and easy to use trigger equipped aerosol can, and contains an excellent indoor and outdoor paint.
