Preparing the surface
Prepare the surface for color or finish by fixing surface flaws, sealing when necessary and sanding to ensure a perfect finished look.
Raise shallow dents
- Lift minor dents with water or alcohol
Repair gouges and other flaws
- Use wood putty to repair gouges and scratches
Remove stains
- Bleach wood to remove stains
Wood conditioner
- A special conditioner for soft woods like pine
Raise the grain
- Important step if using water-based stains or finishes
Grain filler
- Important when working with porous grain woods like mahogany
Sand
- Sand the surface for a smooth, uniform finish
